YAY this year's summer Mica Pottery Workshops!!!

This is an ancient Native Apache technique that uses special Micaceous clay, a beautiful red clay with shiny shards of mica throughtout. These pots are cooking pots and can be put right on a stove burner or fire.

There is so much interest in this workshop, I've had to add additional dates!  I'm amazed...but not really. Just really happy by all your responses! New to this year is a Friday workshop offering. This clay, the process and the end result  are just so beautiful. The workshop is taught in a super relaxing and fun atmosphere making even just the process a treat!

Light weight and durable, micaceous clay vessels have been used to hold water, cook and store food.
It is said that water stored in micaceous clay pots becomes purified and sweet tasting and food cooked in them takes on a rich flavor that is unlike anything cooked in a metal or cast iron pot.

The mineral rich clay also takes on a sheen that makes micaceous clay pots immediately identifiable. They are sought after decorative items as well as utilitarian vessels.

I host the  workshop in sunny Mt.Sinai  , with the last class  being the pit firing. I supply all materials, tools and clay, you supply the hands. The charge for all is $75.00 per person. Typically we make a pot that is over a quart in size which is valued at least at $100 per quart (actually most are over two quarts!).

The granddaddy of Apache mica pots is Felipe Ortega, we do the same process as he does, the coil and scrape method.  You can learn more about this amazing man and  take a look at his website here-http://www.felipeortega.com/index.html

This three  day workshop will focus on making mica clay pots using the traditional coil building method, slipped surface treatment and smoke firing. The first two workshop days students will learn building and finishing techniques for creating a micaceous pot.

The final class of the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to fire their pot in a traditional outdoor firing in a beautiful country setting  while enjoying a "Pot" luck supper (yes pun intended :-) . This year we will have one large pit firing / potluck celebration on October 16th during the full Moon, with hopefully nice cozy fall weather.
